Using Mathematics to Think Effectively - Students
Welcome
Course Description (~10 hours): This mini-moot, Using Mathematics to Develop Effective Thinking, is inspired and significantly drawn from the edX course by the University of Texas, Austin, Effective Thinking Through Mathematics. For this mini-moot, we take a few key points from the 9 week course, add some supplemental web resources and distill it into 10 hours.
To receive credit for this course/assignment, your teacher must pre-approve your participation with Leslie Allen (leallen@pvlearners.net).
The mini-moot uses a series of puzzles or thought exercises; mathematical, logical, geometric, etc., to help you push your process of effective thinking. You'll sense the elements of the process as you work through the tension and satisfaction of problem solving.
Create a shared document now, and as you go through the exercises, add your solution(s) to your doc. You will need to share the URL of your doc with Leslie Allen (leallen@pvlearners.net) to demonstrate your learning and receive credit. Note that this is an Honor System - don't look up the provided solutions until you've really worked on the problem. This is the whole point of the course, Using Mathematics to Develop Effective Thinking.
The exercises were largely selected from the books of "The Heart of Mathematics", and "The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking", both used heavily in the edX course.
Whenever possible, move from qualitative thinking to quantitative thinking.
Enjoy...
